What Are Zodiac Symbols?

Zodiac symbols are Unicode text symbols rather than pictures. The twelve signs sit together at U+2648 to U+2653 and have been in the standard since 1993; Ophiuchus arrived later at U+26CE, and the planets, nodes and aspects live nearby in Miscellaneous Symbols. They are text, so they take the colour and size of the words around them and paste anywhere text goes.

They are also older than astrology software by a long way — these are the astrological glyphs practitioners have drawn by hand for centuries, which is why a chart written with them reads correctly to anyone who works with charts, and why an image of one does not.

Zodiac Symbols as Text Rather Than Emoji

This is the one that catches people. ♈ on its own is a single character, and each platform decides whether to draw it flat or as a coloured emoji — which is why the same zodiac sign symbol looks monochrome in your document and coloured in someone's phone message. You can force it either way with an invisible character after it: U+FE0E, Variation Selector-15, pins the flat text form, and U+FE0F pins the emoji form. ♈ Aries, ♉ Taurus, ♊ Gemini, ♋ Cancer, ♌ Leo, ♍ Virgo, ♎ Libra, ♏ Scorpio, ♐ Sagittarius, ♑ Capricorn, ♒ Aquarius, ♓ Pisces. Each glyph is a shorthand of the sign's image — the ram's horns, the bull's head, the scales — rather than a picture of it.

Ophiuchus Among the Zodiac Symbols

⛎ is Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer. It is a real constellation the Sun passes through, and Unicode encodes it, but Western tropical astrology divides the year into twelve equal parts and does not use it. It is here because people look for it, not because a chart will ask you for it.

They are two code points rather than one, and that second invisible character is the whole difference — it tells the renderer to draw the flat plain text glyph rather than a coloured emoji. Planet Zodiac Symbols

☉ Sun, ☽ and ☾ Moon, ☿ Mercury, ♀ Venus, ♁ Earth, ♂ Mars, ♃ Jupiter, ♄ Saturn, ♅ Uranus, ♆ Neptune, ♇ Pluto. ⛢ is the astronomers' alternative Uranus glyph, built from the initial of its discoverer rather than from the mythological sign.

Two of these do double duty. ♀ and ♂ are the same characters used as the female and male signs — Venus and Mars are where those symbols come from, and the biological use is the borrowing rather than the other way round.

Node and Point Zodiac Symbols

☊ is the ascending or north node and ☋ the descending or south node — the two places where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. ⚳ Ceres, ⚴ Pallas, ⚵ Juno and ⚶ Vesta are the four main asteroids, ⚷ is Chiron, and ⚸ is Black Moon Lilith.

Aspect Zodiac Symbols

Aspects are the angles between two placements, and each has a glyph: ☌ conjunction at 0°, ⚺ semisextile at 30°, ⚹ sextile at 60°, □ square at 90°, △ trine at 120°, ⚻ quincunx at 150°, ☍ opposition at 180°, and ⚼ sesquiquadrate at 135°. Zodiac Symbols for Sun, Moon and Rising

The big three are usually written as a planet followed by its sign: ☉♌ for Sun in Leo, ☽♓ for Moon in Pisces. The rising sign is the awkward one — Unicode has no ascendant character at all, so charts write it as AC or Asc followed by the sign, as in AC ♊. Anyone offering you a rising-sign glyph is offering you something that does not exist.

Because these are text, a column of placements sorts and searches like any other text, and a note written with them survives being pasted between apps. A screenshot of a chart does neither.

The signs run in order from ♈ at U+2648 to ♓ at U+2653, with ⛎ apart at U+26CE. The luminaries and planets are U+2609 for ☉, U+263D for ☽, U+263F to U+2647 for Mercury through Pluto, and the aspects U+260C, U+260D and U+26B9 to U+26BC. Every tile in the grid shows the code point it was assigned.

There are no short Alt codes for any of them — the original PC character set contained no astrological glyph, so unlike ° or ± these need the full decimal value on the Windows numeric keypad: 9800 for ♈, rising by one to 9811 for ♓, then 9934 for ⛎, 9737 for ☉ and 9789 for ☽. On Linux, Ctrl+Shift+U then 2648 and Enter gives ♈; on a Mac, the Character Viewer at Ctrl+Cmd+Space.

How do I get zodiac symbols as text and not emoji?
