How the Fraktur Text Generator Works

Fraktur emerged in 16th-century Germany as a refined calligraphic style, becoming the dominant typeface for German-language printing for over 400 years. Its broken, angular letterforms distinguish it from the smooth curves of Roman type, carrying connotations of tradition, formality, and medieval craftsmanship that remain powerful today in creative projects.

Most of the alphabet comes from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, at U+1D504–U+1D537. Five capitals do not, and the section below explains why that turns out to matter. Digits are not covered at all — Unicode never encoded blackletter numerals, so 𝔈𝔰𝔱 1892 mixes two registers whether you want it to or not.

Because these are characters rather than a font, the look travels: it survives a copy and paste into a username field, a chat message or a document, none of which would accept a typeface you had installed locally.

Which Toolbar Options Work With Fraktur

The register is gothic — metal sleeves, tattoo lettering, old newspaper mastheads — so the useful question for each control is whether it holds that or softens it.

꒰꒱ Wrap has two pairs in the right register: ††† … ††† and ☠☠☠ … ☠☠☠. There is no crossed-swords pair among the 57 prefixes, so ⚔ has to be typed if you want it.

• Separator is worth setting because blackletter runs dense and word gaps get lost in it. Cross (×) and Diamond hold the period feel; Dot is the neutral option.

✦ Symbol and ❋ Pattern both insert emoji, and that is the mismatch — full-colour pictures beside angular monochrome letterforms read as two different centuries. The florals and sparkles are the worst offenders, but the problem is the colour rather than the motif.

Fraktur or Bold Fraktur?

Two blackletter weights exist here, and they are genuinely different characters rather than a setting:

• Fraktur (𝔎𝔫𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱): Lighter, more elegant strokes. Use for refined aesthetics, vintage branding, formal invitations, and decorative accents where subtlety matters
• Bold Fraktur (𝕶𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙): Heavier, more dramatic weight. Use for metal band names, fierce guild titles, and commanding headlines where power is the goal
• Letters only, both cases. Digits pass through unstyled, so a date or a year will always break the effect
• C, H, I, R, Z come from a different Unicode block — and they are the better supported five, not the riskier ones. See below
• Screen readers may announce these as "mathematical fraktur" characters—avoid for critical accessibility content
• Mix uppercase and lowercase for best readability rather than using all caps throughout
• Neither weight suits body text. Both are unsearchable, both are read out oddly by a screen reader, and both slow reading down — use them for a name, a title or a heading

Five Capitals Are Mathematical Operators

C, H, I, R, Z do not come from the blackletter block. They were encoded years earlier in Letterlike Symbols, because mathematics had been using them as notation long before anyone encoded a styled alphabet.

Two of them you have almost certainly seen in that role. ℜ and ℑ are the standard signs for the real part and imaginary part of a complex number — written Re(z) and Im(z), or in older texts exactly as these two characters. ℌ turns up for Hilbert spaces. They are working symbols that happen to be drawn in blackletter, not decorative letters that happen to be useful.

The practical consequence is the opposite of what you would guess. Those five sit in the Basic Multilingual Plane, so almost any font covering mathematics has them, while the other twenty-one capitals are beyond it and depend on much narrower coverage. ℭℌℑℜℨ will render nearly anywhere; 𝔄𝔅𝔇𝔈𝔉 is a bet on the reader's font.

It also means a word can split visibly. ℭℌ𝔄ℜ𝔗 draws three characters from the old block and two from the new — where a font has only the first, you get three letters and two empty boxes.

Fraktur Was Banned in 1941

The reason this style reads as old German rather than simply old is a specific and well-documented piece of history.

Blackletter was the ordinary typeface of German printing for around four hundred years — not a decorative choice but the default, the way roman type is the default in English. A long argument ran through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries over whether Germany should switch to roman type like the rest of Europe.

It ended abruptly. In January 1941 the Nazi regime issued a decree abolishing Fraktur in favour of roman type, on the false claim that the letterforms were of Jewish origin. German printing switched within a few years and never switched back. Blackletter survives now in mastheads, beer labels, certificates and band logos — as a quotation of the past rather than as a working typeface.

Worth knowing before putting it on something. The style carries a specific national and historical association for a lot of readers, quite separate from the medieval-fantasy reading it has in English-speaking design.

What It Costs to Paste

Uneven, because of the split above. The twenty-one main capitals and all twenty-six lowercase letters are beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane, so each is a surrogate pair — one character to a reader, two units to anything counting UTF-16, and four bytes in UTF-8. The five Letterlike capitals are one unit and three bytes.

So 𝔉𝔯𝔞𝔨𝔱𝔲𝔯 is seven characters and 14 UTF-16 units, while ℭℌℑℜℨ is five and five. A bio field with a tight limit will take a surprising amount less of this than of plain text.

And 𝔉𝔯𝔞𝔨𝔱𝔲𝔯 is not the string Fraktur — search, autocomplete and mention lookups will not match it, which is the usual trade and matters most on a name someone else has to find.

Fraktur, Gothic, Old English: Which Is Which?

Three names that get used for one another constantly, and they do not mean the same thing.

Blackletter is the family — the dense, angular writing used across Western Europe from roughly 1150, and named for how much ink it puts on the page. Every style below is a blackletter.

Old English is a nickname rather than a typographic term, and a misleading one: it has nothing to do with the Old English language, which was written in insular script and runes, not in blackletter at all. It is the style on newspaper mastheads, varsity jerseys and name tattoos.

Gothic is worse. In British usage it usually means blackletter; in American type founding it historically meant sans-serif, which is why News Gothic and Franklin Gothic have no blackletter in them whatsoever. If someone asks for a gothic font, ask which they mean.

Unicode fraktur exists in one style only, in two variants — regular and bold text. There is no Textura, no Rotunda, no Schwabacher. So if you specifically want the chunky Old English look for a tattoo or a jersey design, the closest copy-and-paste approximation is Bold Fraktur — 𝕺𝖑𝖉 𝕰𝖓𝖌𝖑𝖎𝖘𝖍 — and a true Textura needs a font file you download and install.

Can I use it commercially, or for a tattoo? Yes. There is no licence, because these are characters rather than someone's typeface design. For a tattoo, though, treat the on-screen output as a preview rather than artwork — the letterforms you see are drawn by whatever font your device has, and a tattooist works from a proper blackletter typeface at high resolution. Copy the text to show what you want; let the artist set it.

How do I type it on a keyboard? You do not. There is no key and no shortcut, because these are not a font style your system can switch to — they are separate characters. Copying them is the whole method, on desktop and mobile alike.

Can I export a font file? No. A fraktur font generator of this kind converts text; it produces output you paste, not a .ttf you install. Downloadable fraktur fonts and gothic fonts are a different product — free fraktur typefaces are easy to find, and they only work where installed. If you need a real file for a logo or a print job, that is a font download rather than a converter.

Where Fraktur Text Actually Works

Anywhere that takes plain text and does not need to be searched. A Discord or gaming profile, an Instagram or TikTok bio, a Twitter or YouTube title, a caption, a username, a chapter heading. Every platform renders the same characters, so the fraktur style you see here is the one that arrives.

Where it does not: anything with a paragraph of running text, because the letterforms are dense and readability drops sharply past a few words; anything a person needs to type back to you; and any field where the plain string matters more than the look.

Blackletter is not a cursive — the strokes are broken rather than joined, which is where the name Fraktur comes from.
