Check mark symbols are Unicode text characters for a tick, a cross, and the boxes they sit in. The everyday ones live in Dingbats at U+2713 to U+2718 and the ballot boxes at U+2610 to U+2612, and they behave like letters — your font draws them and your text colour fills them.

Two of them do not. ✅ and ❌ are emoji, and most platforms draw ✅ as a white tick on a bright green rounded square and ❌ as a red cross, at their own size, regardless of the text around them. How do I get a green check mark?

Take ✅. It is the only character here that is green by itself — most platforms draw it as a white tick on a bright green square, and that colour comes from the emoji font rather than from your text. ✓ and ✔ take whatever colour the surrounding text has, so they are green only if the text is.

Is √ a check mark?

No, and a lot of pages list it as one because it looks similar. √ is U+221A, the square root sign, and so is ∨ at U+2228, which is the logical OR. Both are on the math symbols page. Using them as ticks works until someone searches the document, reads it aloud with a screen reader, or opens it in a maths context.

What is the difference between ✓ and ✔?

Weight only. ✓ is Check Mark and ✔ is Heavy Check Mark — the same shape drawn thin and thick. ✓ suits body text, ✔ suits headings and anywhere it has to compete with bold. Both are text characters and both take your colour.

Is there an Alt code for the check mark?

Not a short one. Unlike ± or °, the tick was never in the original PC character set, so there is no two or three digit shortcut. Alt+10003 on the numeric keypad gives ✓ and Alt+10004 gives ✔, but copying is faster and works on every device.
