How the Glitch Text Generator Works

Which Toolbar Options Work With Glitch Text

The marks reach well above and below the line, so the practical question for each control is whether it survives being crowded.

꒰꒱ Wrap is the best fit because the frame sits outside the mess. ▓▒░ … ░▒▓ is a dither ramp that reads as signal degradation, and ┏━━ … ━━┛ gives a hard broadcast frame. Both are in the picker and index-matched.

The marks bleed vertically and words run into each other, and the separator replaces word gaps — not the space between letters — so it gives the eye somewhere to rest. Pipe and Slash hold up best, being tall enough to survive the crowding. A middle dot would vanish, and is not among the 23 options anyway.

Keeping Glitch Text Usable

• Balance glitch intensity: Heavy corrupted text becomes unreadable. Use maximum weird text sparingly for emphasis on key words.

The reason to use this rather than a graphics effect is that the output is characters. It goes into a username, a display name, a bio or a chat message — places an image cannot reach — and stays selectable afterwards.

The reason not to is that it cannot animate and cannot be art-directed. A real glitch effect in a video or a thumbnail is made by displacing pixels: channel splits, scan-line offsets, frame tearing. None of that is available to a character, which can only carry marks that a font already knows how to draw.

It Is a Stamp, Not Corruption

This is the honest description of what the style does, and it explains why the result reads as decoration rather than damage.

Real corruption is irregular. When a file is damaged or a signal drops, no two characters break the same way — that unevenness is the whole visual signature. This applies the identical six marks to every character, so ä̵̺̻̊́ä̵̺̻̊́ä̵̺̻̊́ä̵̺̻̊́ is four copies of one stamp rather than four differently broken letters.

At a glance and at small sizes that reads fine, because the eye takes in texture before pattern. In a long run it stops working: the repetition becomes visible, and what looked like interference starts looking like a border.

Glitch Against Zalgo, Measured

The two styles get described as heavy and light versions of one another. Checked against the two maps, that is backwards on both counts.

So Glitch is the heavier of the two per character, and Zalgo is the one that actually varies — three different mark-sets spread across the alphabet, which is what gives it an uneven look this page cannot produce. Neither has a chaos slider.

Put plainly: choose Glitch for a uniform, dense texture, and Zalgo when you want the letters to look like they broke independently.

What It Costs to Paste

More than anything else on this site. Every character becomes 7 code points — the letter plus six marks — so g̵̺̻̈̊́l̵̺̻̈̊́ï̵̺̻̊́ẗ̵̺̻̊́c̵̺̻̈̊́ḧ̵̺̻̊́ is six letters to a reader and 42 characters to a counter.

In bytes each mark costs two in UTF-8, so a glitched letter is thirteen bytes against one plain: g̵̺̻̈̊́l̵̺̻̈̊́ï̵̺̻̊́ẗ̵̺̻̊́c̵̺̻̈̊́ḧ̵̺̻̊́ travels as 78 bytes where glitch takes 6.

That is the practical ceiling on where this can go. A display name field with a short cap will refuse a glitched word of ordinary length, and a bio field will be full after a few. It is also why the effect belongs on one word rather than a phrase — not for taste, but because the budget runs out.

And g̵̺̻̈̊́l̵̺̻̈̊́ï̵̺̻̊́ẗ̵̺̻̊́c̵̺̻̈̊́ḧ̵̺̻̊́ is not the string glitch. Nothing will search, sort or autocomplete it, and nobody can type it to find you.

Only A–Z, a–z and 0–9

The map covers sixty-two characters and the space. Everything else passes through exactly as typed, which has one consequence worth planning around.

Accented letters do not glitch. Type café and you get c̵̺̻̈̊́ä̵̺̻̊́f̵̺̻̈̊́é — the é arrives clean because é is its own character and is not in the map. The same goes for ñ, ü, å and every other precomposed letter, and for anything in Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese or Korean.

Punctuation does not glitch either. An apostrophe, a full stop or an exclamation mark stands clean at the end of a glitched word.

So this works as intended for English and for languages written in unaccented Latin letters, and produces a half-converted line for most others. If you need a non-English word glitched, the workaround is to strip the accents first — though that changes the word.

Does It Work Everywhere?

It is standard Unicode, so any device that can display text can display it. What varies is not whether it works but how far the marks are allowed to reach.

• Rendering — every platform stacks the marks slightly differently, so the same string sits taller on one device than another. Nothing is lost; the shape shifts.
• Line spacing — marks extend above and below the line, and some apps clip them at the boundary of the text box rather than growing the line to fit.
• Length caps — the most common failure by far, and the reason a Discord or Roblox name gets rejected. Seven code points per character adds up long before the text looks long.
• Normalisation — a field that normalises text on save can reorder or drop combining marks, so a name can be accepted and then appear plain afterwards.
