The Letters Do Not Actually Lean

Worth being exact, because the name suggests otherwise. Nothing here is rotated, italicised or set on an angle. The letters stand upright exactly as you typed them, and a separate stroke is placed in front of each one — ╱a╱n╱g╱l╱e is a normal word with slashes interleaved, not a slanted one.

The lean is an illusion built out of repetition. Because the stroke rises left to right and appears at a regular interval, the eye reads the whole run as tilting even though every letter is vertical. What Unicode does carry is a slanted alphabet of its own — a set of code points whose glyphs are drawn on a lean — and the sans italic generator uses it: diagonal comes out as 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭, with the letters genuinely tilted rather than marked. If leaning letters are what you wanted, that is the page, and unlike a font file it pastes anywhere.

One more style gets tangled with this one in search: flipped text, which turns characters upside down rather than sideways. That is upside down — pıɐƃouɐן — a different transformation again, built from unrelated characters that happen to resemble inverted letters.

One Stroke From a Matched Pair

The character doing the work is U+2571, which Unicode calls the box drawings light diagonal upper right to lower left. It has a twin, U+2572, leaning the other way, and the two exist so that text-mode interfaces could draw diagonal rules and corners — the same set of pieces terminals used for frames and tables.

That parentage explains a detail you will notice at small sizes: the strokes are drawn to reach the edges of their cell so they can join up. Put several in a row and they form an unbroken diagonal band rather than separate marks, which is why a long run reads as hatching. Between letters the effect is looser, and how loose depends on how wide the font sets each character.
