Not ASCII, and Not Multi-Line Art

Two things are worth saying plainly, because the name points at both and the tool does neither.

None of the output is ASCII. ASCII is the 7-bit set, 0 to 127 — the letters, digits and the punctuation on a US keyboard. Real ASCII art is built from those and nothing else: slashes, pipes, underscores, hashes. The five characters this generator adds are all Unicode: █ U+2588, ┏ U+250F, ┓ U+2513, ▛ U+259B and ▜ U+259C.

There is a period connection, though it is narrower than the name suggests. The blocky look really does come from the IBM PC, whose 1981 character set (code page 437) carried the shading and box-drawing characters that BBS artists built with — and █ is one of them, byte 219, still reachable as Alt+219.
